USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Details
Cannasol™ Happy Wilma® Canna Lily warms up the summer garden with tangerine-orange lily-like flowers surrounded by bronzed green foliage. Blooming all summer long until first frost with a compact 18-22" height, they are the perfect choice for high color focal points or for an elegant edge to a bed or path. Excellent container plants too, they are easy-care, self-cleaning plants. Plant in a sunny spot (part shade is okay) with well-drained compost enriched and fertilized soil that can be kept moist once the bulbs have sprouted. As flower stems fade simply cut them back to encourage new growth. Fertilize regularly during the growing season. Pollinator friendly, butterflies and hummingbirds love them. Deer avoid them. Hardy to zone 7, in colder zones simply plant them as annuals or dig the bulbs after the first frost. Clean and dry them for several days, then store them in a cool (above freezing), dark place until spring.

Planting Guides

Summer Blooming Bulbs, including popular varieties such as gladiolus and dahlias, are planted in the spring and bloom in the summer. Most of these bulbs are tropical and require warm weather to be planted. There must not be any danger of frost and your ground temperature must have reached 55 degrees Fahrenheit before planting. Many of our summer blooming bulbs can be planted as perennials in zones 9-10 (zone 8 if mulched), but should be treated as annuals in cooler climates. You can lift them and store them in the fall, or bring patio pots inside before frost. See page 15 of our Planting Guide for a bulb depth planting illustration.

Growing Canna Lilies: Canna Lily bulbs should be planted as annuals in a sunny spot in the ground or in large containers. Water often, as Canna Lilies enjoy moist ground, though constant wetness isn’t necessary. Lift the bulbs before frost and store in a cool, dry place for re-planting the following spring.
