USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Cannasol™ Happy Carmen® Canna Lily is part of the Cannasol™ series of hybrid Canna Lilly that fills the summer garden with non-stop color on compact plants. Dense deep green foliage adds to the beauty of this plant. Flowering from May to first frost, and self-cleaning, this cheery tropical will add a touch of intense red to the summer garden. Plant in full sun to part shade in enriched soil and keep it moist. Happy Carmen grows to 18-22" tall and is ideal for containers as well. Cut back spent flower stalks to keep new ones coming and enjoy the colorful parade of blooms. Hummingbirds and butterflies love it, deer stay away! Once the plant begins to grow, fertilize regularly to keep blooms coming. Hardy to zone 7, in colder zones, lift the bulbs in fall and store in a cool (frost free), dark place until danger of frost is past in spring.

Planting Guides

Summer Blooming Bulbs, including popular varieties such as gladiolus and dahlias, are planted in the spring and bloom in the summer. Most of these bulbs are tropical and require warm weather to be planted. There must not be any danger of frost and your ground temperature must have reached 55 degrees Fahrenheit before planting. Many of our summer blooming bulbs can be planted as perennials in zones 9-10 (zone 8 if mulched), but should be treated as annuals in cooler climates. You can lift them and store them in the fall, or bring patio pots inside before frost. See page 15 of our Planting Guide for a bulb depth planting illustration.

Growing Canna Lilies: Canna Lily bulbs should be planted as annuals in a sunny spot in the ground or in large containers. Water often, as Canna Lilies enjoy moist ground, though constant wetness isn’t necessary. Lift the bulbs before frost and store in a cool, dry place for re-planting the following spring.
