Lift your perennial bed to a new dimension with 'Escape' Calla Lily (Zantedeschia). The dark, dramatic blossoms almost defy the senses! Deep purple to black blooms make these stunning plants a striking addition to the summer garden. Plant as a bold focal point or add contrast to your garden border, where they are sure to turn heads. Easy to grow, deer-resistant, and pollinator-friendly, they make long-lasting cut flowers, too. Deer and rabbits avoid them, while butterflies and hummingbirds enjoy their nectar.
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
'Escape' Calla Lily (Zantedeschia) is all about drama. Plant them as a focal point or with white Callas for even more excitement. 'Escape' shows off nicely with Allium, Salvia, Monarda, and Veronica as well. They create an elegant focal point when planted en masse as well. Blooming for 6-12 weeks, Callas are surprisingly easy to grow. They do best in full sun or partial sun when protected from the hottest afternoon exposure. Butterflies and hummingbirds are attracted to the flowers, and they are deer and rabbit resistant. We recommend planting 3 rhizomes within a square foot area for a striking effect of blooms and foliage. Cut flowers last up to two weeks in a vase. Hardy in zones 8-10, Callas may be grown as annuals in colder areas, or dug before the first frost and stored in a cool, dry area to re-plant the following spring.
Not recommended for California, where Calla Lilies are considered invasive.

Planting Guides
Summer Blooming Bulbs, including popular varieties such as gladiolus and dahlias, are planted in the spring and bloom in the summer. Most of these bulbs are tropical and require warm weather to be planted. There must not be any danger of frost and your ground temperature must have reached 55 degrees Fahrenheit before planting. Many
of our summer blooming bulbs can be planted as perennials in zones 9-10 (zone 8 if mulched) but should be treated as annuals in cooler climates. You can lift them and store them in the fall, or bring patio pots inside before frost. See page 15 of our Planting Guide for a bulb depth planting illustration.
Growing Calla Lilies:
These tender bulbs can be planted in pots or in the ground. Calla Lily bulbs can be planted as perennials in zones 9-10 (zone 8 if mulched) but should be treated as annuals in cooler climates. You can lift them and store them in the fall, or bring patio pots inside before frost. Calla Lily bulbs quickly create a sizable plant, often growing to 36" high.
