USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Details
Take the leap into big form and color with our Bold Bouquet Bulb Collection. Café au Lait Dahlia (3 bulbs) is one of our favorite Dahlias, with its big blooms up to 10" across. Washed in cream, touch by pink and shaded by mocha, these flowers are a sultry and beautiful addition to a bouquet. Plant bulbs in a full sun location in compost enriched, well-drained soil and stake them to help support the big blooms. They will flower from mid-summer to frost. Purple Flora Gladiolus (15 bulbs) is rich in deep purple color and tall for vertical interest in the garden and as a cut flower. At 48-60" tall, they make an excellent backdrop for summer’s colors. The exotic Gloriosa Lily (3 bulbs) will climb 6-10' and flower with blooms to spare with unusual lily-like reflexed petals flashing with reds and yellows. Plant in enriched, well-drained soil in sun or part-shade near a trellis or wall it can climb on. The big 4-5" flashy flowers will steal the show in bouquets and on the vine. Lastly. Christmas Bells (Sandersonia aurantiaca) blooms with orange-yellow lantern flowers lasting up to 3 weeks as a cut flower. Plant in a full sun location and this easy to grow plant will cover itself in thimble-sized bells from late spring to early summer. (1 bulb). Total of 24 bulbs. Note: All parts of the Gloriosa Lily plant are poisonous if ingested. Toxic to squirrels, dogs, cats and horses.

Planting Guides

Summer Blooming Bulbs, including popular varieties such as gladiolus and dahlias, are planted in the spring and bloom in the summer. Most of these bulbs are tropical and require warm weather to be planted. There must not be any danger of frost and your ground temperature must have reached 55 degrees Fahrenheit before planting. Many of our summer blooming bulbs can be planted as perennials in zones 9-10 (zone 8 if mulched), but should be treated as annuals in cooler climates. You can lift them and store them in the fall, or bring patio pots inside before frost. See page 15 of our Planting Guide for a bulb depth planting illustration. Read our article about How To Grow Dahlias.

Growing Dahlias: Plant Dahlia tubers after spring frosts in good garden soil with full sun. Dahlias must be protected from high winds, so we suggest you position them against a wall or be ready to stake them. Keep the plants well-watered and free of bugs, applying flower fertilizer as they grow. Your dahlias will be in full bloom by July or August, with the enormous flowers continuing to bloom until frost. As frost threatens, pull up the roots and trim off the stems. You can store the tubers in a cool dry place until the following spring.
