To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
A choice Sandwort that grows like a patch of silver-green lichen; its tiny, triangular leaves form a hard mat of foliage. Native to the mountains of Spain, it blooms in summer with minute white flowers.
Baptisia (False Indigo) are native prairie plants known for their showy flowers and ornamental seed pods. Preferred Growing Gonditions:
Plant in most any soil including clay, but avoid wet, low areas.
Baptisia needs full sun.
No mulch is needed for these perennials.
Water regularly the first growing season then much less often during second growing season and beyond.
Plants in this genus are legumes and need no additional fertilizer.
Special Comments:
Seed heads are ornamental, so deadheading is optional; the plant won't re-bloom. Cut back to the ground in early to mid-spring.
Plants have large tap roots and should not be divided or transplanted once established.
