Dwarf Leadplant (Amorpha)

Dwarf Leadplant (Amorpha nana) is a wonderfully compact native shrub that covers itself with purple flower clusters in late spring. Sweet honey-scented flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. A member of the legume family, Leadplant adds nitrogen to the soil, helping it thrive in poor soils and benefiting of all the plants surrounding it. Suitable for the most challenging sunny sites. USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Details
(24-36" tall x 24-36" wide) Dwarf Leadplant (Amorpha nana) is not as well-known as its larger growing cousin, Amorpha canescens, but it's every bit as lovely and useful in the waterwise landscape. Its compact form is perfect for small spaces and patio plantings. Grown from Colorado collected seed, this western shrub is slow growing, long-lived, and durable. In fall, foliage turns to a bright golden yellow. Being a legume, Dwarf Leadplant and can take nitrogen from the air and transform it into a nitrate fertilizer with the help of a symbiotic soil-dwelling microbe called Rhizobium; as a result, this beautiful dryland shrub looks green and healthy even in the leanest soils. Indifferent to soil type, it grows well in all kinds of soil including clay. The seeds are valuable food for wildlife, and it requires little to no maintenance, no pruning required. Place it in full sun. Great companion plants include Penstemon strictus (Beardtongue), Oenothera (Evening Primrose) as well as Schizachyrium (Little Bluestem) and other native ornamental grasses. Enjoy the ease of this cold-hardy native shrub from New Mexico up through North Dakota to the Canadian prairie provinces. Introduced by Plant Select® – waterwise, garden-tested plants proven to thrive in the high plains and intermountain west for more beauty, with less work.

Planting and Growing Amorpha (Leadplant)

Amorpha canescens (Leadplant) - a legume, this North American wildflower is deep rooted and adds nitrogen to the soil.

  • Plant in fast-draining, sandy or sandy-loam soils with full sun. Mulch with gravel or pine needles.
  • Water regularly the first growing season and infrequently but deeply after it's established.
  • Leave standing over the winter. Cut back hard in mid-spring.
  • No need to fertilize, as it is a legume and adds nitrogen to the soil naturally.
