Planting Guides

Step-by-Step Wildflower Seed Planting Instructions

  1. Check for your last frost date and plant after this has passed. Choose a spot on your property that gets 6 or more hours of direct sun a day unless you are planting seeds for shade.
  2. Prepare your soil by clearing the area of all existing growth. Simply dig up everything that is growing, turn the soil and rake the area flat. If this is an area that has never before been gardened, you may need to till the area up to remove growth.
  3. Mix the seeds with sand* for better visibility and scatter the seeds directly on top of the soil. If you are sowing a larger area, we recommend using a seed spreader; if not, you can sow by hand.
  4. We recommend lightly compressing the seeds into the soil, making sure not to bury them. You can either walk on them, use a board or if you are sowing a larger area, rent a seed roller.
  5. Water so that the soil is moist, not soaking wet, until the seedlings are about 4-6" tall. After that, the seedlings will survive on natural rains. If you are experiencing very dry weather, we recommend watering occasionally.

Comments about High Country Gardens Western Xeriscape Wildflower Seed Mix:

I'm a slightly neglectful gardener - I like things that can take rain, wind, and drought, and keep growing. These seeds really help that area of my yard where it all happens. If they can grow there, they'll thrive. In Arizona, it is mostly sunny, but temperatures can be a bear in the summer. Seed goes out late summer into fall, and late winter - what comes up is amazing.

Comments about High Country Gardens Western Xeriscape Wildflower Seed Mix:

I mixed two xeric mixes together for more variety.
Just after sowing the area, we had nearly two weeks of rain, leaving the area under 6" of water. With the sunshine returning, the wet conditions actually jump started the germination. I had masses of beautiful flowers from Spring through early November when we had several hard frosts. I can't wait until next Spring when the perennials will also be in full bloom.

Comments about High Country Gardens Western Xeriscape Wildflower Seed Mix:

I bought a lot of native seeds late last spring and scattered them on five acres-woodland, shade and sun, on my mountain property. It was late probably; I had lots of purple asters and late in the fall there were about several small "delphinium blue" five petaled flowers. That's it.

I am very hopeful this spring as I did recognize poppy seeds too. I AM WAITING! or, I am disappointed? Too soon to review.

However, Please include a list of the type of seeds in your packs. Other than the poppies I have no idea what to look for. Thanks, Ann, and Happy Spring.

          Q & A

          USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

          • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
          • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
