2-3" tall x 18-24" wide. This outstanding Mediterranean Teucrium has been a very impressive performer in our Xeriscape Demonstration Garden these past years. Gray Creeping Germander grows into a low mound of thin, silver leaves that form a beautiful backdrop for the honey-scented deep lavender-pink flowers. Shear back 1/3 in mid-spring to reinvigorate established plants. Plant in "lean" well-drained soils and mulch with gravel for best performance. (cutting propagated)

Planting Guides

Teucrium (Germander) is a huge family of perennials, herbs and shrubs found world-wide, with the highest concentration of species in the Mediterranean region of Europe and Northern Africa.

Preferred growing conditions:
  • Plant in sandy or gravel soils, although many species can adapt to well drained loam soils; avoid clay.
  • Most species are best positioned in a full sun location.
  • Mulch with gravel or pine needles in dry Western climates. Leave un-mulched in moister climates.
  • Water regularly the first growing season to establish the plant. Thereafter, only occasional deep watering is needed, when conditions are dry in the heat of summer.
  • Deadhead the flowers when blooming is finished. Groundcover Teucrium chaemadrys 'Prostratum,' when used as a lawn substitute, can be mowed to deadhead the flower spikes.
  • Fertilize lightly in the fall with Yum Yum Mix.
  • Special comments:
  • Many Teucrium species are evergreen and shouldn't be cut back in the spring. But in late fall, rake off brown tree leaves and other fall debris to keep plants clean and foliage healthy over the winter. In spring, winter killed tips can be sheared off.
  • Teucrium chaemadrys and T. chaemadrys 'Prostratum' are a zone more cold hardy in dry winter Western climates than in the moist Eastern US.

Comments about High Country Gardens Teucrium aroanium:

I did the "buy 2, get 1 free" deal last year and purchased 6. I planted them in an area with morning sun, in a mild fall, and waited. We had a fairly mild but wet winter. This spring, I can't even find the plants. And I have to say, this has been my experience with High Country live plants. The 3 yr. old lavender I bought is the same size as when I got it: the agastache ava's I planted haven't come up at all. I regularly buy plants locally here in Flagstaff, and have had no problem with them, so I know it's not the environment or my technique. I will say that the bulbs I purchased did well, but live plants not so much.

Comments about High Country Gardens Teucrium aroanium:

It has grown beyond expectation for the first season. The DEER have not chewed on it or the TURKEYS have not tried to dig it up. I am turning to your nursery for future landscape needs. Everything has been a trial and error with frustration in researching plant material.

Give it some time, and this charming little creeping germander will set it's roots into those hot and dry spots that make other plants shrivel and die. Just don't give it too much water!

Comments about High Country Gardens Teucrium aroanium:

Have grown this plant for 4 years now, and it's one of my absolute favorites. It has the lovely, mounding form of a spring bloomer like candytuft or alyssum, but blooms from mid-summer on. Bees love it, people always ask about it. The foliage is evergreen, and the flowers are a gorgeous orchid purple. Much prettier than the catalog photo! My only complaint is that it doesn't seem to reseed. I would love more of it!

Planted in full sun in a highly visible area along the curb. Fills in a large area of bare dirt, where gravel washed out during monsoons. Already had some well-established plants, that remain evergreen and attractive year-round, and the new ones are filling in nicely as well.

          Q & A

          Suggested Companion Plants:

          USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

          • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
          • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
