Details

Plant the Summer Showstopper Inferno Strip Garden, and you’re sure to have passersby stop to admire your yard. This collection of plants is big, colorful, long-blooming and pollinator-friendly—it is an excellent beginner’s garden! Save $15 off the single plant price of $196.83!

Designed to provide low-care, season-long color in narrow, hot and dry planting areas; it’s ideal for those difficult inferno strips found between the street and sidewalk. This garden is also perfect for edging front walks and adding a narrow band of flowers to difficult-to-plant south and west sides of garages and other buildings. All but one of the plants are less than 3 ft. in height, so there are no problems when backing out of your driveway and looking for street traffic.

Included are 4 of Penstemon pinifolius, 3 of Blonde Ambition Blue Grama Grass, 2 of Achillea Moonshine (2.5"), Nepeta Select Blue (2.5"), Perovskia atriplicifolia Blue Spires, Solidago Wichita Mountains, 1 each of Centranthus ruber Coccineus, and Scrophularia macrantha for a total of 17 plants in 5" pots that will fit a 3' x 16' or 6' x 8' space. Not recommended for coastal areas of OR, WA or CA, as the Centranthus Ruber can behave aggressively there. We reserve the right to substitute a plant with similar attributes.

Planting Guides

Planting and Caring for Pre-Planned Gardens & Collections

Soil Preparation: Remember that proper soil preparation is the key to healthy, vigorous blooming perennials. Use Yum Yum Mix and a high quality compost at recommended rates to prepare the soil. Inoculate the plant roots with Plant Success mycorrhizal inoculant. Planting: Plant according to the mature size of the plant. Don’t be tempted to put the plants too close based on their size in the pots. They’ll grow quickly and cover the space shown in the planting map. (Maps included only with Pre-Planned Gardens, not Collections.)

Fertilizing: Once annually in mid-fall, after plants begin to go dormant. Use Yum Yum Mix or Yum Yum Mix Winterizer at recommended rates to improve the soil and provide essential plant nutrients.Use it with high quality compost, mix half and half by volume and spread on top of the soil. Scratch it in lightly and water thoroughly. It is also beneficial to treat the plant roots with Plant Success® mycorrhizal root inoculant if you didn’t do so at planting time. (Inoculation only needs to be done once.)

Mulching: In arid climates mulching is very beneficial. Coarse textured composts, shredded leaves, pine needles and composted bark are all excellent mulch materials. Apply to a depth of 1-2 inches. Replenish annually (or as needed).

Comments about High Country Gardens Summer Showstopper Pre-Planned Garden:

I ordered this garden last year, along with a number of other plants, and planted them all in horrific heat. I watered everything faithfully, used yum yum and Superthrive and hoped for the best. This year the plants started popping up early and are now huge. Neighbors I don't know who walk their dogs or jog past have stopped to ask me if these were the same tiny plants they saw be planting last year. They are amazed! Wanted to know where I got them. I own another home an hour away where I had planted two other pre-planned gardens 9 years ago. High Country was owned by someone else at the time. The plants are healthy and beautiful but it took a couple, three years to get to the size of the plants I bought just last year for this house. Can't say enough good things about the quality and customer support.

    Disappointing performance

Comments about High Country Gardens Summer Showstopper Pre-Planned Garden:

I was very excited to order this pre-planned garden, having heard wonderful things about High Country Gardens from both my mother and mother-in-law. What arrived was disappointing, and frankly felt cheap. The plants did not include penstemon, jupiter's beard, or redbirds in a tree. Arriving in late fall, the plants did not have time to establish and only about sixty percent of them survived the relatively mild winter. The prairie blue grass and the goldenrod died, and frankly, the other plants look puny. This garden cost nearly $200 and the results are quite simply not worth it.

Comments about High Country Gardens Summer Showstopper Pre-Planned Garden:

I've been trying to grow a garden with a wildflower look for years. This preplanned garden was my last gasp and it did not disappoint. I followed the directions and waited and waited but when the time was right, everything bloomed and looked fantastic. In addition, all plants tolerated an eactic Cincinnati summer...soaking wet or bone dry. I was happy every day!

Comments about High Country Gardens Summer Showstopper Pre-Planned Garden:

We ordered this garden as a replacement to our rose bed which had dwindled
after many years. It was amazing and filled the whole bed by the end of the summer! It still looks good (not blooming anymore) at the end of November
in NJ. My husband and I were very pleased with this garden.

            Q & A

            Suggested Companion Plants:

            USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

            • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
            • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
