Details

15" tall x 24" wide (cutting propagated). This is a superb dwarf Goldenrod, recently introduced by Dr. Richard Lightly, former director of the Mt. Cuba Center for the Study of Piedmont Flora in Delaware. The sturdy, arching golden-yellow flower stems are profuse and make an eye catching display wherever they are planted. Pictured here with Aster 'Purple Dome' in the background. Like all of the Goldenrods, "Golden Fleece" is very easy to grow in average garden conditions.

Comments about High Country Gardens Solidago sphacelata Golden Fleece:

Has grown well and the deer and rabbits have left it alone but hardly the pretty yellow colors displayed - I have two plants and both are more of a dull, dirty, brown gold - not at all attractive - probably going to pull it out.

Comments about High Country Gardens Solidago sphacelata Golden Fleece:

One year ago I moved to a larger, sunnier property. I left behind a 25 year old mostly shade , 3 season garden! Our new home was landscaped but had no blooms and the deer population has increased greatly. This wonderfull little plant arrived healthy and strong in the spring. By fall it had doubled its space, filling in wonderfully for a first year garden! And the blooms! It was so worth the wait (sept/October) to have fun, dense wands of the perfect shade of yellow. And the deer(6 babies were born through the summer) haven't touched it!!! I am looking forward to its maturing!

    Q & A

    USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

    • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
    • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
