Details

Some years ago while living in eastern CO, Lauren Springer Ogden was faced with the prospect of revitalizing or removing a narrow strip of half-dead Kentucky Blue grass along the street side of her property. She decided to take a more creative approach and planted that narrow strip of ground between the sidewalk and street with an assortment of tough, xeric, lower growing perennials. The concept of the Inferno Strip Garden was born. While not everyone has a street-side "Inferno strip", this garden collection is also ideal for other hot, sunny, narrow problem areas like those found against garage walls, along drive ways or in raised brick planter beds.

The Inferno Strip Garden uses an assortment of xeric (water-thrifty) perennials to create a colorful, long blooming, low maintenance flower bed. We recommend that it be mulched to a depth of 2" with crushed gravel. Save $25 off the single plant price of 253.73!

Included are 3 plants each (5" pots unless noted) of Veronica pectinata (2.5"), Agastache neomexicana, Penstemon strictus, Aethionema schistosum or Grandiflora (2.5")OR Saponaria ocymoides, Salvia sylvestris Caradonna, Penstemon Elfin Pink, Dianthus gratianopolitanus Firewitch, 2 plants each of Callirhoe involucrata (2.5"), Artemisia versicolor Seafoam (2.5"), 1 plant each of Centranthus ruber Coccineus or Agastache Ava, and Nepeta faassenii Select Blue for a total of 27 plants that will cover approximately 60 sq. ft. We reserve the right to substitute a plant with similar attributes.)

This fits rectangular areas ranging in size from 12 ft. long x 5 ft. wide, to 20 ft. long x 3 ft. wide. Order additional gardens to plant longer areas. A free planting/care guide instruction sheet is included showing how to arrange the plants. Suitable for use in zones 5-8. Not recommended for coastal areas of CA, WA and OR as the Centranthus ruber can behave aggressively there. (Note: Not all the plants shown in the photo are sold in this garden collection. However, the overall color scheme and look of the garden will be the same.)

Planting Guides

Planting and Caring for Pre-Planned Gardens & Collections

Soil Preparation: Remember that proper soil preparation is the key to healthy, vigorous blooming perennials. Use Yum Yum Mix and a high quality compost at recommended rates to prepare the soil. Inoculate the plant roots with Plant Success mycorrhizal inoculant. Planting: Plant according to the mature size of the plant. Don’t be tempted to put the plants too close based on their size in the pots. They’ll grow quickly and cover the space shown in the planting map. (Maps included only with Pre-Planned Gardens, not Collections.)

Fertilizing: Once annually in mid-fall, after plants begin to go dormant. Use Yum Yum Mix or Yum Yum Mix Winterizer at recommended rates to improve the soil and provide essential plant nutrients.Use it with high quality compost, mix half and half by volume and spread on top of the soil. Scratch it in lightly and water thoroughly. It is also beneficial to treat the plant roots with Plant Success® mycorrhizal root inoculant if you didn’t do so at planting time. (Inoculation only needs to be done once.)

Mulching: In arid climates mulching is very beneficial. Coarse textured composts, shredded leaves, pine needles and composted bark are all excellent mulch materials. Apply to a depth of 1-2 inches. Replenish annually (or as needed).

Comments about High Country Gardens Soft Colors Inferno Strip Pre-Planned Garden:

I planted this garden last year along a west-facing wall. The plants did ok...not great. But, I think I placed them too closely together. This year thinned them out a bit (moving some plants to other parts of my garden) and already a huge difference. Each plant is thriving!

I think actually I will like the new placement better since I have mixed the softer colors of this group into some of the brighter purples, pinks and yellows in the rest of the beds.

Overall a nice collection that introduced me to some new plants. And, as everyone says the second year seems to be when you start to see a big improvement.

Q & A

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
