Planting Guides

Tips On Growing Achillea (Yarrow)

Achillea (Yarrow) are long-blooming, Old World perennials that are exceptionally easy-to-grow and provide ample nectar for butterflies. They are resistant to browsing rabbits and deer. Most are tall, upright growers with the exception of evergreen Achillea ageratifolia (Greek yarrow) and Achillea millifolium ‘Sonoma Coast,' which are groundcovers.

Preferred growing conditions:

  • These perennials grow in most any type of soil including clay.
  • Should be mulched in dry climates with most any type of mulch materials including gravel in xeric plantings.
  • Only requires deep but infrequent watering after their second growing season. Too much water makes them floppy.
  • Plant in full, hot sun.
  • Adding just a few handfuls of compost and Yum Yum Mix in the planting hole is enough. Avoid planting into a rich, highly-amended soil; they don't need it and it can make them floppy.
  • Special comments:

    • Deadhead plants to prolong bloom.
    • Achillea millifolium 'Sonoma Coast' is a superior lawn grass replacement and should be mowed to deadhead it after blooming in early summer. This keeps the foliage tidy and looking good.

    Garden care:

    • Fertilize Achillea once in fall with Yum Yum Mix and Planters II.
    • Leave Yarrow standing over the winter. They have ornamental flower heads that catch the snow providing winter interest. Cut back to 1-2" inches above the soil in mid-spring when the plants begin to wake up.
    • Achillea ageratifolia (Greek yarrow) is an evergreen groundcover that should NOT be cut back other than to deadhead it in early to mid-summer to encourage re-blooming.
    • Plants can be divided in mid-spring when clumps die-out in the center or become too large for their place in the garden.

Tips For Growing Gaillardia (Blanket Flower)

Gaillardia (Blanket Flower) is a long-blooming native wildflower that is easy-to-grow and provides ample nectar for butterflies. It's resistant to browsing rabbits and deer.

Preferred growing conditions:

  • Needs sandy/gravely and sandy loam type soils. Avoid clay.
  • Does best with gravel mulches.
  • After their second growing season, only requires deep but infrequent watering. Too much water makes them floppy and shortens their lifespan.
  • Plant in full, hot sun.
  • Adding just a few handfuls of compost and Yum Yum Mix in the planting hole is enough. Don't plant into a rich, highly-amended soil.

Special comments:

  • Deadhead plants to prolong bloom. Leave a few seed heads on the plants to encourage re-seeding.
  • Blanket Flowers are generally grown from seed and are short lived perennials (3-4 years) and gardeners should replace them with new plants when the old plants lose vigor.
  • Garden care:

    • Fertilize Gaillardia just once in fall with Yum Yum Mix and Planters II.
    • Leave all Gaillardia varieties standing over the winter and cut back to 1-2" inches above the soil in mid-spring when the plants begin to wake up.

Planting and Caring for Pre-Planned Gardens & Collections

Soil Preparation: Remember that proper soil preparation is the key to healthy, vigorous blooming perennials. Use Yum Yum Mix and a high quality compost at recommended rates to prepare the soil. Inoculate the plant roots with Plant Success mycorrhizal inoculant. Planting: Plant according to the mature size of the plant. Don’t be tempted to put the plants too close based on their size in the pots. They’ll grow quickly and cover the space shown in the planting map. (Maps included only with Pre-Planned Gardens, not Collections.)

Fertilizing: Once annually in mid-fall, after plants begin to go dormant. Use Yum Yum Mix or Yum Yum Mix Winterizer at recommended rates to improve the soil and provide essential plant nutrients.Use it with high quality compost, mix half and half by volume and spread on top of the soil. Scratch it in lightly and water thoroughly. It is also beneficial to treat the plant roots with Plant Success® mycorrhizal root inoculant if you didn’t do so at planting time. (Inoculation only needs to be done once.)

Mulching: In arid climates mulching is very beneficial. Coarse textured composts, shredded leaves, pine needles and composted bark are all excellent mulch materials. Apply to a depth of 1-2 inches. Replenish annually (or as needed).

      Q & A

      Suggested Companion Plants:

      USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

      • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
      • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
