Planting Guides

Planting and Caring for Pre-Planned Gardens & Collections

Soil Preparation: Remember that proper soil preparation is the key to healthy, vigorous blooming perennials. Use Yum Yum Mix and a high quality compost at recommended rates to prepare the soil. Inoculate the plant roots with Plant Success mycorrhizal inoculant. Planting: Plant according to the mature size of the plant. Don’t be tempted to put the plants too close based on their size in the pots. They’ll grow quickly and cover the space shown in the planting map. (Maps included only with Pre-Planned Gardens, not Collections.)

Fertilizing: Once annually in mid-fall, after plants begin to go dormant. Use Yum Yum Mix or Yum Yum Mix Winterizer at recommended rates to improve the soil and provide essential plant nutrients.Use it with high quality compost, mix half and half by volume and spread on top of the soil. Scratch it in lightly and water thoroughly. It is also beneficial to treat the plant roots with Plant Success® mycorrhizal root inoculant if you didn’t do so at planting time. (Inoculation only needs to be done once.)

Mulching: In arid climates mulching is very beneficial. Coarse textured composts, shredded leaves, pine needles and composted bark are all excellent mulch materials. Apply to a depth of 1-2 inches. Replenish annually (or as needed).

Comments about High Country Gardens Pollinator Paradise Pre-Planned Garden:

I really loved the idea of this. I bought 2 as the area I planted was larger. I was not terribly impressed with the plants - some had been damaged in shipping but I thought they would be fine. They were all smaller than I was expecting. Let me also say I have NEVER prepared a bed like this for planting - I am much more casual and I get great results. This was a chore - but I wanted it to look good so I made the effort. It is now Labor Day Weekend and the results have been unspectacular to say the least! One plant I would give an excellent rating and the others well here they are itemized:
    * Agastache 'Blue Fortune': Gorgeous Really grown well and the bees are loving it!
    * Solidago 'Fireworks':Growing OK but no blooms and not very big
Echinacea purpurea: Disappointing. Plants are small and they have not broadened out. I have had these in a different garden in the area and they were big and gorgeous from their first season.
Rudbeckia Goldstrum: These are pretty good. I really did not need these as I have a bunch in the front yard I could have transplanted - I guess it will be a couple of years before the new plants look as good as my older ones.
Agastache 'Coronado Red": Not good at all. One was damaged and is half the size of the other - but the other is barely growing either
Hyssops: Also, not good. None were damaged but the one plant is half the size of the other and they are not growing very well
Liatris: This one is the worst. One plant has not grown at all I don't even know how it is alive - of the other 3, only one has really grown much,
I will never order again. I will rather design my own garden and get the plants locally. That way I will get larger plants that will actually grow here and not require so much babying! I have very good luck gardening without too much fuss - this just looked pretty - expensive but pretty. Never again!

Comments about High Country Gardens Pollinator Paradise Pre-Planned Garden:

I love the packaging they came in. They arrived in perfect condition and planted them a week later. So far, they are looking fantastic and I'll post later in the season how they are progressing with photos. I think I'll be getting more perennial gardens from you next year.

          Q & A

          USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

          • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
          • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
