Details

6-8' x 5-10' wide. 'Major Wheeler' puts on a hummingbird display unrivaled by any other Honeysuckle variety. Garden trials have demonstrated that this is the most profuse bloomer of its species. With its mass display of thin tubular, red-orange flowers from late spring through the end of summer and highly disease resistant foliage, 'Major Wheeler' is a low care, high color addition to the landscape. Bring hummingbirds up close to your patio by training 'Major Wheeler' onto a nice trellis or pergola. A fast growing vine, use it to quickly cover unsightly fences.

I bought two Major Wheeler honeysuckle plants in the spring and planted them in large containers on my balcony. Both started growing immediately, but I accidentally killed one of them. The other continued on and grew 3-4 feet in the first summer which was more than I expected. Attached is a photo of it still blooming on October 31.

Lonicera Major Wheeler is one of several vines that I use to feed and attract hummingbirds. It's a great vine that I use along with Dropmore Scarlet and others.

This plant is in its second season and already 4 feet tall and blooming profusely! It appears to be quite hardy for zone 5/6. I have it planted next to an arbor trellis and can't wait to see it grow up and over in the coming years. Thanks High Country Gardens!

Comments about High Country Gardens Lonicera sempervirens Major Wheeler:

I put my lonicera where it could climb up a trellis to hide a fence in back of a man made creek I installed. It is filling in and spreading nicely. It's not quite picture ready, but will be next season.
It's the perfect plant for the task. It takes a lot of room, so one needs to be aware of that in planning.

It is in my landscape, it is doing well, except when the deer find it, still it survives if not thrives. Without deer, it would be awesome, not the plants fault.

I live in Gallup, New Mexico where gardening is a challenge. The Major Wheeler had buds on it until Christmas and stayed green all winter. It survives in very cold temps and lots of wind. It is getting a lot fuller on the trellis. A very hardy plant

We started planting these 4 years ago and add a few more to an unattractive fenceline each year. Hummingbirds love them, the flowers are beautiful and they are low maintenance.

                        USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                        • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                        • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
