Details

15" tall x 18" wide (cutting propagated). Introduced to the U.S. by Dan Hinkley, this is an improvement on the taller flower cultivars like Herrenhausen. 'Rotkugel' is more floriferous and has a more mounding habit in flower. The plant forms low-spreading stoloniferous mats of foliage that come into bloom from August through October. The flowering stems have large, loose heads of bi-color flowers with dark purple calyces and deep pink flowers. Butterflies love this plant! Cut back to green basal growth in spring.

Comments about High Country Gardens Origanum Rotkugel:

I planted this last spring in Santa Barbara Ca (very much affected by the current drought). This little plant thrives with minimal water: the leaves are welcome relief from all the brown in the area and the bees love the flowers. It all survived a very rough transplant from clay pots to in the ground. Great plant, will be using it as a groundcover for other areas.

Bees love this Origanum Rotkugel, and therefore, so do I. I purchased 6 additional ones to attract more pollinators.

Comments about High Country Gardens Origanum Rotkugel:

I planted my Rotkugel in an area that does not get much water, and last year we only had 18" of rain in central Texas. It barely blooms, but as a ground cover, it spread to about 4x4, and its leaves are beautiful. I planned to plant it as an edging, but it took over my bed so I moved it. It transplants well. Our nights are warm; usually it is still 80 at midnight; maybe you have to have cooler nights for it to bloom.

          Q & A

          USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

          • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
          • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
