Details

6-8' x 5-10' wide. Major Wheeler Honeysuckle (Lonicera) puts on a hummingbird display unrivaled by any other Honeysuckle variety. Garden trials have demonstrated that this is the most profuse bloomer of its species. With its mass display of thin tubular, red-orange flowers from late spring through the end of summer and highly disease resistant foliage, 'Major Wheeler' Honeysuckle is a low care, high color addition to the landscape. Bring hummingbirds up close to your patio by training 'Major Wheeler' onto a nice trellis or pergola. A fast growing vine, use it to quickly cover unsightly fences. Partially evergreen in southern climates, deciduous in colder zones of the north. Because this blooms on old and new wood, there is no need to prune other than to shape the vine once blooms have passed.

I bought two Major Wheeler honeysuckle plants in the spring and planted them in large containers on my balcony. Both started growing immediately, but I accidentally killed one of them. The other continued on and grew 3-4 feet in the first summer which was more than I expected. Attached is a photo of it still blooming on October 31.

I have two growing on a trellis. It bloomed the first summer even though it is small yet. I am looking forward to seeing it covering the entire trellis with its beautiful and abundant red blooms.

Comments about High Country Gardens Lonicera sempervirens Major Wheeler:

I planted immediately upon receipt and even after our Virginia Cold Snap in "April" this is still thriving and I actually think I am have blooms this year.. Can't wait to a little further in the Spring and Summer to see how it turns out. For a beginner like me, I love these vines.. Pretty good in planters and they have a mind of their own.

I will post pictures to show the process of these vines in the next couple of days.

This plant is in its second season and already 4 feet tall and blooming profusely! It appears to be quite hardy for zone 5/6. I have it planted next to an arbor trellis and can't wait to see it grow up and over in the coming years. Thanks High Country Gardens!

I put my lonicera where it could climb up a trellis to hide a fence in back of a man made creek I installed. It is filling in and spreading nicely. It's not quite picture ready, but will be next season.
It's the perfect plant for the task. It takes a lot of room, so one needs to be aware of that in planning.

I live in Gallup, New Mexico where gardening is a challenge. The Major Wheeler had buds on it until Christmas and stayed green all winter. It survives in very cold temps and lots of wind. It is getting a lot fuller on the trellis. A very hardy plant

The plants were shipped beautifully and I planted them right away. They don't seem to be growing all that quickly, but hopefully now that we are starting the 2nd growing season they will take off.

We started planting these 4 years ago and add a few more to an unattractive fenceline each year. Hummingbirds love them, the flowers are beautiful and they are low maintenance.

                                USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                                • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                                • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
