Planting Guide for Trees and Shrubs
Things to do before planting:
- Call utility company to have lines marked before digging.
- Make sure area is accessible for driver to deliver large trees.
- Mark irrigation lines near planting area.
- Have water available to planting area.
Planting
- Dig hole twice as wide as container and same depth; keep top of root ball at ground level.
Prepare backfill
- Mix soil from hole with Soil Mender Blend at the rate of 1 part Blend to 2 parts of your soil.
- Add Super Phosphate; and if needed, add soil acidifier.
- Recommendations for superior growth: Add a complete fertilizer such as Yum Yum Mix or Gro-Power with Planters II.
Preparations for root balls
- Do not break root ball.
- If in a container cut 5 or 6 slits around the edges and bottom of the root ball to encourage new growth.
- On ball & burlap leave entire wire basket on until placed in hole.
Set tree in hole
- Center tree in the hole to proper planting depth.
- Ball & burlap: Cut away wire on sides as deep as is possible/reachable without letting root ball fall apart.
- On ball & burlap untie burlap and remove burlap away from top of root ball.
- Do not remove burlap or wire from sides. This may damage roots.
- Add amended backfill to hole.
- Tap down new soil to remove air pockets.
- Create water basin around plant.
Water new planting
- Add water slowly to saturate root ball.
- Add Root Stimulator Combo (Superthrive and liquid Seaweed Concentrates)
- Repeat application of root stimulator in 2 weeks, and monthly if needed.
Maintenance Watering
- Water regularly for the first two growing seasons.
- Water at least every 3 to 4 weeks in winter.
- Use 2-4” Soil Mender Mulch™ year round on top of soil.
- Fertilize as needed.
