More About Soil Mender®The story behind the Soil Mender products.

Last week we gave a bit of history to the Soil Mender® products, highlighting Soil Mender® Blend and Top Soil. This week we’ll take a look at Soil Mender® Mulch and Compost. Greg Birkenfeld, one of the three partners in the family owned Texas company, said they first started the business by making a compost. It’s comprised of aged cattle manure (from all the dairy farms nearby) and he said they are thinking of changing the name. “It’s not really compost in the way most people think of compost,” he said. “It’s fertilizer.” But it’s the same fertilizer that’s used to make the Blend product that Birkenfeld calls the “fix all” when it comes to amending soil. It’s approved by the Texas Department of Agriculture for use on organic soil. Soil Mender® Mulch is also a top quality, organic product. Made of composted cotton burrs, it’s a light and textured product that helps loosen tight soils, retain moisture in sandy soils, and “mend” soil structure. When turned into the soil at the end or beginning of the growing seasons, Soil Mender® Mulch will continue decomposing and help raise organic matter. Uses for Soil Mender® Mulch include: Planting Trees, Shrubs, Vines, and Roses: Mix 25%-50% mulch with existing soil to backfill the prepared hole. Soil Enrichment of Vegetables and Flower Beds: Spread 1-2” of Mulch over soil, mix or till into soil whenever possible. For Mulching, water retention, and weed control: Spread 1-3” between garden rows and around the base of plants or trees. |
