(seed propagated). Near Belen, Torrance Co., NM. This Steven Brack collection is from the most northerly known population of this tiny beauty and is the most cold hardy. I've overwintered this plant successfully in zone 6 winter temperatures here in Santa Fe, NM. Less clustering than plants from other locations. Limited numbers. Zones 6-10. *Collection #SB1327* *EPITHELANTHA:* Incredible plants with tiny spines so small and dense they completely hide the body of the plant like white fur. The tiny salmon flowers are not showy. Of much greater interest are the bright red fruits that top the stem, which resemble tiny red peppers (hence the common name in New Mexico, "Little Chilis"). Very challenging to grow. This species requires the most intense sun possible and excellent drainage. Mulch with crushed gravel. Usually grows on rocky limestone cliffs. Dry winter conditions are mandatory.
