This is a very interesting form of Claret Cup found in the Manzano Mountains of north central NM. It often grows in the shade of Pinon and Ponderosa pine trees in this habitat. Mature plants are typically sparsely spined, usually with only a single or double thorn protruding from each areole. The dark green stems are much more visible as they aren't covered by dense spination. It forms a small mound of stems typical of the Claret Cups. The flowers are orange-red in color. A very attractive, unusual variant! Zones 5-10 (*Photo is the winter appearance of species.*) 3" deep Standard pot.
