Planting Guides

Planting and Caring for Pre-Planned Gardens & Collections

Soil Preparation: Remember that proper soil preparation is the key to healthy, vigorous blooming perennials. Use Yum Yum Mix and a high quality compost at recommended rates to prepare the soil. Inoculate the plant roots with Plant Success mycorrhizal inoculant. Planting: Plant according to the mature size of the plant. Don’t be tempted to put the plants too close based on their size in the pots. They’ll grow quickly and cover the space shown in the planting map. (Maps included only with Pre-Planned Gardens, not Collections.)

Fertilizing: Once annually in mid-fall, after plants begin to go dormant. Use Yum Yum Mix or Yum Yum Mix Winterizer at recommended rates to improve the soil and provide essential plant nutrients.Use it with high quality compost, mix half and half by volume and spread on top of the soil. Scratch it in lightly and water thoroughly. It is also beneficial to treat the plant roots with Plant Success® mycorrhizal root inoculant if you didn’t do so at planting time. (Inoculation only needs to be done once.)

Mulching: In arid climates mulching is very beneficial. Coarse textured composts, shredded leaves, pine needles and composted bark are all excellent mulch materials. Apply to a depth of 1-2 inches. Replenish annually (or as needed).

Comments about High Country Gardens Habitat Hero Birdwatcher Pre-Planned Garden:

I purchased a pre-planned garden in hopes of getting an appropriate mixture of quality plants. For various reasons the Habitat Hero garden didn't meet these expectations.
First, two substitutions were made without providing any information on what was substituted for what (i.e. where the substitutes were to be planted) and no pruning or maintenance information for those plants.
Second, while most of the plants did quite well this year five of the plants failed. One, penstemon pinifolius I believe, arrived "sleeping" and never even sprouted growth. Four more, all in the front row, quickly wilted and died.
Third, hopes of having nice visual arrangement were not met since the blond ambition grass quickly overwhelmed the adjacent colorful plants even though I planted everything farther apart than in the provided plan.

I had been willing to purchase a relatively expensive pre-planned garden based on previous experience with your jumbo waterwise garden in 2014. I planted half of an area with your garden and the other half with locally purchased drought tolerant plants. None of your plants failed that year while approximately one third of the local plants needed to be replace this year. But paying the higher prices for High Country Garden plants is not justified if when about one third of the Habitat Hero Garden also need replacement in the first year.

I planted this garden in the spring and boy did it take off! It grew so well, and so fast I had wished I planted the plants a little further apart. It turned the biggest eyesore in my garden into one of the loveliest.

Comments about High Country Gardens Habitat Hero Birdwatcher Pre-Planned Garden:

These plants are surprisingly heat resistant. We are in Central CA and had high temps over 100 degrees much of the summer. Most grew really well, others (Ribes Crandell and Hesperaloe parviflora) very slowly. One was dormant and never grew. Windbreaker grew most impressively. They were planted Spring 2015 and are dormant now, I have high hopes for next year.

So many plants for the money. All plants arrived healthy and grew very quickly. I cannot wait until next spring, when everything will grow larger.

I planted my garden as soon as it was shipped and it took off right away. One dormant plant never revived and was quickly and happily replaced. IThe garden is only a few months old and is already the prettiest place in my yard. I love it and will deffinately be ordering more preplanned gardens from High Country Gardens

Comments about High Country Gardens Habitat Hero Birdwatcher Pre-Planned Garden:

We purchased 2 of these gardens for a large area of our front yard. We've purchased other pre-planned gardens from High Country Gardens in the past and always like that they take the guesswork out of what will work nice together for a given size area. The only con for this garden is that there were a couple of plants included that proved to be extra tasty for the neighborhood rabbits. Also, a few of the plants did not come back this spring (they were planted last spring), but we are getting replacements for them without any hassle.

Comments about High Country Gardens Habitat Hero Birdwatcher Pre-Planned Garden:

I planted this garden in front of my house last year on the left half of my yard. It looks great. All of the plants did great except for the Maximilian's sunflower. Replaced that one and am waiting to see if it will go this year. It needs to do its thing since it's the centerpiece of my garden.

                USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
