Go 'green' with this ecologically sensible lawn. You'll save time, water, fuel and money while enjoying a deep green, thick carpet of low growing, fine textured turf. The 'No Mow' seed mix is the answer to planting a low care grass lawn in the cooler, medium rainfall areas of the upper Midwest, northeastern US and higher elevations of the Intermountain West. For hotter climates and more southern areas of the country, use the 'Low Work and Water' Seed Mix. This specially blended mix of six different dwarf Fine Fescue grass varieties has been formulated to provide a very deeply-rooted (fine and fibrous, reaching as deep as 2-3 feet), dense turf that needs little additional irrigation (except during dry spells without summer rains). Left unmowed, the grass blades create a wonderfully soft, swirling pattern. For a more manicured look, it can be cut once every four to six weeks to a height of 3" to 4". In the Western US, 'No Mow's' cool season growth habit is much better suited for use at elevations above 6,000-7,000 feet than warm season native grasses (like Blue Grama and Buffalo Grass). 'No Mow' is best sown in March through early May and late August through September. Use at a seeding rate of 5 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft. of lawn area.

Planting Guides

Grass Seed Step-by-Step Planting Instructions

View Complete Grass Seed Planting Guide and Soil Preparation Guide

1. Preparing the area for planting. We recommend leveling the planting area as much as possible to eliminate high or low spots. Till the soil if possible about 4-6 inches deep, as the soil should be loose and clump-free before planting. If your area is already somewhat bare and even, we recommend skipping the tilling process as it can promote new weed growth or unwanted grass growth. You can then add Plant Success Granular Mycorrhizal Root Inoculant to improve seed germination.

2. After your soil is prepared, apply the seed at the recommended rate. Planting rates vary depending on the size of the seed:

Blue Grama Grass Hachita: seed 4 lbs covers 1000 square feet
No Mow Lawn Grass Seed: 5 lbs covers 1000 square feet; 10 lbs covers 2000 square feet
Low Work and Water Dwarf Fescue Grass Seed: 5 lbs covers 500 square feet,10 lbs covers 1000 square feet.

To make sure you’re spreading the seed evenly, scatter 1/2 of the seed walking north to south and 1/2 of the seed walking east to west.

3. If you have poor soil, you could lightly apply an organic fertilizer after seeding, although this is not a necessary step for strong growth. We recommend using Yum Yum mix to amend your soil.

4. Many choose to cover their grass seed after planting, even though this is not necessary. If you do choose to cover your seed to help retain moisture and hold the seed in place, we recommend a maximum depth of 1/4”. You can cover the seed with topsoil, clean wheat or barley straw, or peat moss. Coated seeds such as Bermuda and Clover seeds should not be covered more than an 1/8” deep.

5. Water gently and regularly, keeping the seeds moist until they begin to sprout. This could mean watering more than once a day if you’re having a dry spell. Once the seeds sprout, water deeply and less frequently. This helps to ensure a deep rooted, healthy lawn or meadow.

6. Do not mow until your lawn is at the recommended height. For most grasses, this is about 3-6 weeks after planting, but could be longer depending on growing conditions. Remember to be gentle when mowing the first few times -- the seedlings will be somewhat tender.

7. After mowing several times, you can apply an organic fertilizer to promote strong growth, but this is not a necessary step.

Remember: It may take weeks or even a month for the seeds to grow.

This grass seed mix was just what I needed to stabilize a fairly steep back slope left by the excavator when my house was built. Interspersed with California poppy, larger ornamental grasses, or hardy perennials such as Chrysothamnus or Perovskia, it makes a lovely casual - but not unkempt looking - groundcover. Here in central Washington (hot, dry summers and cold, snowy winters) it does appreciate some extra water during the dry season.

Comments about High Country Gardens No Mow Lawn Grass Seed:

I bought this grass seed for a stone pathway. The walkway is about 2-3' wide with irregular stones throughout. We wanted to use a different ground cover originally but due to costs decided on grass. We chose this grass seed because of its low maintenance and durability. The seed germinated quickly and looks nice though it seems to be growing faster than the grass close by (poor soil and very compacted) I did have to seed a second time due to sparse patches (probably my fault) but we love the texture feel. I am also using the seed to repair patches in the front yard.

Comments about High Country Gardens No Mow Lawn Grass Seed:

We have a huge area of lawn as well as many flower beds in an arid climate. This grass is perfect for our needs. I mow the lawn probably 5 times over the season from May- September. I use a walk behind gas operated mower. Even though the lawn is large, since I only have to mow a few times, I prefer using a small mower rather than investing and maintaining a riding one.

Comments about High Country Gardens No Mow Lawn Grass Seed:

used to reseed a lawn area where disruptive work was done in June. No Mow grass has been growing in July and August and seems to be taking hold permanently. Conditions have not been great due to semi-draught. Watering has helped it along. It seems to be pretty tough.

Comments about High Country Gardens No Mow Lawn Grass Seed:

Oh, how I hated mowing a lawn in 105 degree heat. This grass seed has ended that for me. It has taken two years for it to grow in, and fill in, but it it worth the wait. Truly no mow. You can mow if you want to for a more manicured look. The first spring I sowed, I had spotty germination-we had a very warm zone 7 winter- so this year, I reseeded in late winter with microclover and HCG Alternative Lawn Wildflower Seed Mix for a no mow prairie wildflower xeriscape lawn alternative. It's now Midsummer, and I have not touched the mower. My yard looks amazing, lush and full of tiny flowers, a magical carpet. The best thing? Water once a week, not everyday like my neighbors. Once those deep roots are established, I will see if I can let it go longer. Did I mention no mowing? Grows very slowly, but that's the point, right? Be patient. Give it time to fill in.

Comments about High Country Gardens No Mow Lawn Grass Seed:

Starting a lawn in my rocky clay Taos yard was a challenge, but this seed did the job. Needed mowing every 5 to 6 weeks and little water after germination. I made the mistake of overseeding with a similarly described product from the local nursery in the fall, and there is no comparison. The grass now needs weekly mowing and lots of water. My advice is to start with this seed and buy enough for at least one later re-seed. You'll be glad you did!

Very pretty delicate, childrens traffic would not be good and does better with top dressing, weeds need to be removed---I am organic so that means the old fashioned way---pull or dig. Is hardy and comes back but I want mine thicker so I am reseeding this year.being in the Rocky mountains I needed to dif rocks but I am used to that!Love the light green color against the junipers.

We planted our first grass space about 3 years ago with this no mow lawn mix. We loved it so much, we keep expanding the lawn area. It really looks great, gets very dense, stays soft, and keeps things cooler. We mow on varying intervals using the highest setting on the mower. I highly recommend this grass seed!

                Q & A

                USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
