Comments about High Country Gardens Gazania krebsiana Scarlet Tanager:

I planted these last fall and it's now early April in Colorado. These plants not only survived the winter but they are thriving! They were good size when I received and planted them and they have already more than doubled in size. I am excitedly awaiting their bloom time. Based on the health of the early plant, I have no doubt they'll be lovely.

Comments about High Country Gardens Gazania krebsiana Scarlet Tanager:

I have had some difficulty finding just the right place for this attractive gazania. The soil in my garden is excellent but the light is quite variable. This plant needs just the right lighting to do well. I now have it planted with other mid sized plants that are not invasive. It does not compete well. It receives direct mid-day sun for several hours a day and then shade. It starts to blossom in April, a full month earlier than the hardy Butterscotch Baby gazania but man fewer but larger blossoms.

                    Q & A

                    USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                    • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                    • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
