Description:

Designed by David Salman.

Beat the heat with cool foliage, bright flowers, and a tapestry of textures!

I love the distinctive look of gray and blue foliage in the xeric garden. Contrasting different leaf shapes and colors in a perennial bed add striking, textural backdrops that enhance the colorful flowers. This pre-planned garden uses an assortment of easy-to-grow perennials and ornamental grasses to create this tapestry of blooms and foliage. The garden blooms orange on its western edge while the eastern three quarters of the garden has flowers of blue and pink over leaves of gray and blue. Site in full, hot sun in well drained, non-clay soil.

The garden covers approx. 85 sq. ft. (14’ x 6’) and contains:

  • (1) each of Artemisia ‘Powis Castle’, Panicum ‘Heavy Metal’, Stachys ‘Silver Carpet’ and Lavandula ‘Sharon Roberts’
  • (2) each of Schizachyrium ‘Prairie Blues’, Marrubium rotundifolium, Zauschneria ‘Wayne’s Select’
  • (3) each of Agastache rupestris, Stachys inflata, Festuca ‘Boulder Blue’, Salvia daghestanica and Teucrium aroanium for a total of 25 plants.

Festuca idahoensis ‘Siskiyou Blue’ substituted for Festuca glauca ‘Boulder Blue’.

Fill in and soften the garden’s edges with an optional group of wonderfully gray Thymus lanuginosus (Woolly Thyme) for a total of 35 plants. The Garden comes with complete planting and maintenance instructions.

Zones 5-8.
