Description:
30-36” x 36” wide (seed propagated)
A fabulous wildflower species, K. caulescens, is native to the high grassy slopes of South Africa’s Drakensberg Mountains. There, in mid to late summer, you’ll find huge fields of it ablaze with thousands upon thousands of large soft-orange and yellow flower spikes. Here at home, Blue-leaf Red Hot Poker adds color, texture and structure to the garden with its robust rosettes of blue foliage. These uniquely colored strap-like leaves stand out among their green leafed companions. While this plant is widely adaptable across much of the country, it does especially well in gardens at higher altitudes.
Kniphofia caulescens thrives in compost-enriched soils that are well drained over the winter months (No low spots that collect rain and snow.) To take advantage of its structural foliage, plant it in front of a large green bladed clump grass like Miscanthus sinensis ‘Silberfeder’ for a spectacular display of flowers and foliage. Its high altitude origins make it cold hardy into Zones 5-10.
Grown in 5” premium pots.
Special Notes:
Plant this with Miscanthus sinensis ‘Silberfeder’ for spectacular display of color and foliage!
