Phemeranthus calycinum
Flame Flower
Quick Facts :: Growing Tips
Legend
Description:
8-12” x 5” wide, (seed propagated), (Note, botanists have changed this plant’s genus from Talinum to Phemeranthus.) This Ozark Mountain native, where it grows in rock outcrops, is a great long blooming plant for xeriscapes. Flame Flowers produce a profusion of large, 1” magenta flowers that appear to float above the ground on wiry, wispy stems. Flowering is continuous from early summer into fall. Phemeranthus is very easy to grow, preferring a lean, well-drained soil and needing extra water only where annual rainfall is less than 15”. I enjoy inter planting Flame Flower with Penstemons, hardy cacti and other rock garden and xeric plants. Mulch with gravel. Often goes dormant before the first frost of fall! Spring plant only in zone 5 & 6 climates. Zones 5-9.
Special Notes:
Plant with Scutellaria, cold hardy cacti and Zinnia grandiflora!
