Rosa eglanteria
Fragrant Sweet Briar Rose
Quick Facts :: Growing Tips
Legend
Description:
6-8’ x 6-8’ wide (cutting propagated) Broad, rounded growth habit. A large-growing antique rose, this native to the British Isles was a favorite of Shakespeare, who wrote of it back in the late 1500s. The single pink-with-white-center flowers are wonderfully fragrant. Even the foliage smells sweetly of apples, especially when damp with morning dew. Sweet Briar Rose produces a heavy crop of colorful hips for winter interest. Particularly tolerant of alkaline soils, so plant it with your lilacs.
Zones 4-8.
