Phlox grayii
Arizona Pink Phlox
Quick Facts :: Growing Tips
Legend
Description:
3-4” x 12-18” wide. (seed/cutting propagated) This showy Western native phlox is a choice addition to the water thrifty landscape with its profuse display of nickel-sized, clear rose-pink to pink flowers held just above a tidy mat of evergreen foliage. Blooming occurs in late spring with some re-bloom in late summer when summer “monsoon” rains have been ample. These plants were originally propagated from seed collected by seedsman Alan Bradshaw of Alplains (alplains.com) in its Coconino Co., AZ habitat. The plant is well adapted to hot, sunny conditions and infertile, fast draining soils. Use Arizona Pink Phlox as a small scale groundcover along paths and along the edges of flagstone patios. I recommend it for use in the xeric garden in place of Phlox subulata as it is more xeric and longer blooming. Plant it in groups of 3’s, 5’s or 7’s to heighten the impact of its awesome spring flower display.
Zones 4-8.
