Penstemon whippleanus
Whipple's Beardtounge
Description:
18” x 10-12” wide, (seed propagated). A Utah’s Choice recommended native plant, this mountain Beardtongue is found in the higher elevations along road cuts and open meadows throughout the intermountain West. Unlike many of the xeric Beardtongues from hotter, lower elevations, Whipple’s Beardtongue mixes well into the traditional perennial border where the soil is richer and a bit more moist. Just make sure the soil is well drained. Especially nice planted along side Golden Columbine (Aquilegia chrysantha) and Blue Bells (Campanula rotundifolia). Our collection of this variably colored species has deep wine-purple colored flowers in mid-summer. Zones 4-8.
