Description:

18-24” x 15-18” wide, (division propagated). ‘Compact Black’ is a new cultivar release of an ornamental South African grass species not yet grown in the US. Selected as a single specimen by HCG horticulturist David Salman from a large group of plants grown from habitat-collected seed, ‘Compact Black’ was a standout plant because of its dense, compact foliage and profuse flowering display. Native to the high slopes of South Africa’s Drakensberg Mountains, Harpochloa is a fascinating evergreen bunch grass blooming in mid-summer with glossy 3” long black, horizontal flower heads (reminiscent of our native blue grama grass, only much larger). Plant in compost-enriched garden soils with regular irrigation. Zones 6-8.
