Eriogonum umbellatum 'Shasta Sulfur'
'Shasta Sulfur' Buckwheat
Description:
18” x 24” wide, (cutting propagated). This superb selection of the widespread Western native wildflower was made by plantsman Bart O’Brien of the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Gardens in Claremont, CA. A shrubby evergreen perennial, “Shasta Sulfur” is a larger, more robust plant than others of this species, growing slowly to form a large mound with attractive evergreen foliage. In late spring, the plant blooms with large umbels of sublime sulfur-yellow flowers lasting 4 to 6 weeks. In winter the foliage has a pleasing burgundy color. A long-lived plant in lean, well-drained rocky or loam soils, this Buckwheat cultivar grows best in hot, full sun areas. All the late spring blooming Penstemon are wonderful companion plants that will help create memorable color combinations in your garden. An excellent nectar source for butterflies, “Shasta Sulfur” is also valued as an edible seed source for songbirds. Zones 5-8.
Special Notes:
Enjoy this with Penstemon and Salvia greggii.
