Claret Cup - Hedgehog Cactus

Quick Facts :: Growing Tips

Full and Afternoon Sun Morning Sun and Afternoon Shade Very Xeric Western Only  Legend

Description:

Very showy species with orange or scarlet flowers found from eastern NM and southern CO, west through AZ into NV, UT and CA. Very heat tolerant. Blooming generally begins 3 to 4 years after the initial planting as the plant matures. (seed propagated).

This is a very interesting form found in the Manzano Mountains often in the shade of Pinon and Ponderosa pine trees. Very sparsely spined, sometimes with only a single thorn protruding from each areole. Doesn’t seem to form the usual mound of stems so typical of the Claret Cups. Very attractive, unusual variant!

Zones 5-10
