Echinocactus texensis
Horse Crippler
Quick Facts
Legend
Description:
3” x 6-10” wide, (seed propagated). A species native to west TX and eastern NM, Echinocactus grows as a single low, rock-hard stem covered with claw-like spines. A bright orange crown of flowers turns into ornamental red-orange fleshy fruits on the large mature plants. This fantastic species has proven itself very cold hardy once established. Maligned by ranchers for puncturing horses’ hooves, it is never the less a stunning xeric garden plant.
Zones 6-10
