Castilleja integra
Orange Indian Paint Brush
Quick Facts
Legend
Description:
8-12” x 6” wide (seed propagated). Native to the prairies of eastern NM and Co, this Indian Paint Brush grows well throughout the high plains and intermountain region. Castilleja is a genus of parasitic plants that must tap into the roots of other plants for their nutrients. We send Indian Paint Brush with a plug of Blue Grama grass as the host plant.
During the first year, fertilize monthly with a light application of a balanced 15-15-15 fertilizer and Root Stimulator Combo. Best grown by gardeners experienced in the cultivation of native plants. Plant in lean, well-drained soils. It loves other prairie natives as companions like, Liatris punctata (Gayfeather), Zinnia grandiflora (Prairie Zinnia), Scutellaria (Skullcap), and grasses like Schizachyrium (Little Bluestem)—all thrive in the same growing conditions.
Zones 4-7
Special Notes:
Castilleja should not be separated from the Blue Grama Grass when planted into your xeriscape.
