Baptisia australis v. minor
Lesser False Indigo
Quick Facts
Legend
Description:
18-24” x 18-24” wide. (Seed propagated.)) Lesser False Indigo is a wonderfully compact version of the much larger Blue False Indigo. Not commonly available, it’s distinguished from its taller cousin “primarily by being a smaller plant with shorter stems and shorter leaves but larger flowers.” The late spring flowers of this native gem are fabulously blue and are followed in late summer by attractive seed pods. This is a very long lived perennial with massive tap roots that resents being moved once established.
Zones 3-8.
Special Notes:
This prairie native wildflower is an excellent companion for ornamental native prairie grasses like Panicum, Sorghastrum, Sporobolis heterolepis and Schizachyrium.
