Asphodeline lutea

King's Spear

Quick Facts

Full and Afternoon Sun Xeric  Legend

Description:

3-5’ x 12-18” wide, (seed grown). The intriguing King’s Spear is a delightfully different addition to the xeric garden. This eastern Mediterranean grassland native has attractive rosettes of swirling, gray-green strap-like foliage that push up towering spikes of big, fragrant lemon-yellow flowers in late spring and early summer. Grow it in stony or well drained non-clay soils. Use it to brighten up patches of ornamental grasses like Little Bluestem and Prairie Switchgrass (Panicum). Mulch heavily in cold areas to improve winter hardiness. Two year old plants. Dry western climates zones 5b (-15_f)-9. Rest of country 6-9.
