Details

10" tall x 15" wide (seed propagated). Hundreds of soft pink flower clusters smother this plant in early spring; get close and you will enjoy its intensely sweet fragrance. The tiny leaves are evergreen, and are a distinctive powder . When finished blooming, cut back the old flowering stems to just above the new cluster of foliage at the base of the plant.

Plant in a lean, fast-draining soil, where Aethionema will spread by reseeding itself. Plant early-blooming, low-growing Veronica liwanensis or Alyssum 'Mountain Gold' to carpet the ground around it.

Comments about High Country Gardens Aethionema schistosum:

THIS LITTLE PLANT IS A STAPLE OF MINE... I TUCK IT INTO POTS WITH OTHER PLANTS AND IT ADAPTS BEAUTIFULLY. IT'S A TOUGH PLANT THAT HOLDS UP TO OUR EXTREME SUMMER HEAT WITH REGULAR WATERING. ALSO, UNUSUAL AND PRETTY.

Comments about High Country Gardens Aethionema schistosum:

Persian stonecress grows very well in my alkaline clayey garden soil. Spreads a bit, but is not rampant. Lovely in closeup. Elevation at my home is about 5800 ft, zone 5.

      Q & A

      USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

      • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
      • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
